Throughout the course of Monsters & Misfits, students are able to thoroughly discussing and interpreting the meaning behind monsters, misfits, and horror aspects in fictional contents. Then, based on our understanding of these concepts, we will relate the imaginary world with the reality we are living in. Gravity Falls is an American animated television series directed by Alex Hirsch in June 15, 2012. The series is about Dipper and his twin sister Mabel Pines spending the summer with their great uncle, Grunkle Stan, in the mysterious town of Gravity Falls, Oregon. Although they think Gravity Falls is a boring place, Dipper and Mabel soon realize there is something strange about the place. Dipper discovers a hidden journal in the middle of the forest, the twins learn the secrets of Gravity Falls and begin the journey to solve the mysteries of this cryptic town. The series captures the twins quest in the search of mythical, unusual phenomenons that reside in the dark side of Gravity Falls.
Follow the twins adventure, Dipper and Mabel will eventually confront their ultimate enemy Bill Cipher, the Dream Demon. Bill makes his first physical appearance in ‘Dreamscaperers’ in the form of a yellow pyramid-shaped creature with one eye wearing a top hat and a bow tie. Despite the way he dresses and talks, Bill ultimate objective is the destruction Gravity Falls, the land full of peculiar residents and abnormal existences. Another way to interpret this is Bill’s character design with the top hat and bow tie represents the norm of men in the 19 century and Gravity Falls represents the misfits of the community. The action of Bill Cipher wants to destroy Gravity Falls symbolizes how society wants to treat the misfits in the real world: they exclude the eccentrics because they think these individuals are different and do not fit with the norm of the society; the society is afraid of new changes and will do everything to get rid the abnormal. This idea is completely tied to the theme of the Monsters & Misfits course. For my adaptation, I will focus on illustrating the same concepts that convey above and develops that message in my own way.
Alex Hirsch did a great job in constructing such a comprehensive world: everything in the show holds a role or has deep meanings, from the overall landscape to small significant details. For example, we can notice triangle shapes appear frequently throughout the episodes. We later found out in the show that they are related to Bill Cipher, the main antagonist of the series. Bill only exists in the Mindscape, but he can see the real world through triangular shapes, which is how he gains his knowledge about the human world. Furthermore, the difference that separates Gravity Falls with other TV shows is its perpetual secrets. The series actively motivates the viewers to examine, investigate all the details in this small town in Oregon to find more secrets, Easter eggs. Many fans of Gravity Falls find out Manly Dan to be the father of Wendy, an auburn-haired girl that Dipper has a crush on, based on a photo of her brothers shown in “Double Dipper” episode and the appearance of Dan’s sons from “The Legend of the Gobblewonker.” There is nothing that I dislike about the show, except there are only two seasons. But if I want to change something about the show, I would like to have more answers to the minors secrets that are hidden from the show but have not been answered. This would encourage people to watch the Gravity Falls even more.
Because the Mystery Shacks is based on a real location in Oregon, we can not move it to anywhere since it will conflict with the realistic aspects of the series. Also, Gravity Falls is dealing with traveling to the past and future. Therefore, it is not a wise idea to change the timeline of the show because it may contradict with another event that happened in the past. Since the Gravity Falls world is tightly connected, I can not seem to find anyone to replace because all of them have a significant role in the movie and relate to each other. Keeping them the same as they do is probably the best choice. My adaptation would be the sequel for Gravity Falls Season 2. I would make the sequel to be the return of Bill Cipher because as the end of the series, Bill makes the last words to come back someday to destroy Gravity Falls. The message of the story should stay the same because the evil will always be defeated.
In my adaptation of Gravity Falls, I intend to focus more on Bill Cipher as his figure symbolizes society. I will evaluate his actions throughout the adaptation and establish some hidden message about the society and the misfits. I will force the audience to question themselves about why do we need to be the same with other people and not acting your own way. My central message of the adaptation is: No matter how hard people judge you by your appearances, personalities, actions, being yourself and do what you believe is the ultimate weapon that surpasses all the hindrance in your way. I want my audience to think to be a misfit and enjoy your own life is a lot better than trying to adapt the society and live a fake life.
